Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force them to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of BJJ is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions.
BJJ was designed so that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using leverage and weight distribution. At Bengaluru MMA, we focus heavily on No-Gi BJJ (submission grappling), which translates perfectly to Mixed Martial Arts and real-world self-defense scenarios.
Our primary focus for MMA is No-Gi submission grappling (training in rashguards and shorts), though we occasionally run Gi fundamentals depending on the branch.
Yes. Because there is no striking, BJJ allows you to spar (roll) safely. If you are caught in a submission, you simply 'tap out' and reset.
Absolutely. Flexibility helps, but BJJ is fundamentally about leverage and body mechanics. Your flexibility will improve naturally over time.
